Introduction: Tendency to store lipids centrally is well connected to development of diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) and cardiovascular morbidity. Providing insight in this process is important.

Method: Relationship between radius of waist line and thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) was compared among forty obese patients (BMI> 30 kg/m2) in the light of their glycemic control parameters (fasting glucose, HOMA IR, HOMA beta).Patients were divided as euglycemic, IFG or T2DM.

Waist line was considered as a circle and radius was determent from well known equation. Thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissue under waist line was measured with ultrasound.

Relation of waistline radius and thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissue we called obesity index (Oi) and it was determent from equation Oi=waist (cm)/6.28×SAT (cm). Higher Oi means higher central lipid deposition.

Results and conclusion: Oi was highest in T2DM group and correlates with glycemic control parameters. This method allows insight in potentially damaging centralisation of lipid depots among obese patients.
