Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy in women of reproductive age and is characterized by hyperandrogenism and menstrual disturbances. It is known that insulin resistance is associated with polycystic ovary syndrome and with obesity.

The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of glucose intolerance and diabetes in women with PCOS and to examine the role of body mass index in the development of this complications.

A total of 104 women with clinical and hormonal evidence of PCOS were recruited from the Endocrinology Clinic of Silesian Medical Academy in Zabrze.

All women underwent 75 g glucose tolerance test and glucose was measured at baseline and after 2 hour. Intolerance glucose and diabetes were categorized according to WHO criteria.

Glucose intolerance was present in 14 (30%) of the 46 lean women (BMI < or = 25), in 4 (22%) of the 18 women with BMI > 25 and < 30 and in 19 (47%) of the 40 obese women (BMI > or = 30). Diabetes was present in 2 (4%) of the lean women, in 1 (5%) woman with BMI > 25 but < 30 and in 3 obese women (7%).

We conclude that both obese and nonobese women with polycystic ovary syndrome are at high risk for impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes.

All women with polycystic ovary syndrome should be screened for glucose intolerance and early diagnosis is very important.
