M Sheppard, University of Birmingham, UK Abstract

Professor Michael Sheppard was appointed as Provost and Vice-Principal of the University of Birmingham on 1 October 2008. The Provost has responsibilities for financial and human resources and the development and delivery of the University strategic plan with special responsibility for the University's external and international relations.

Professor Sheppard is Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist at University Hospital Birmingham and was William Withering Professor of Medicine and Dean of the Medical School. After earning MBChB (Honours) and PhD from University of Cape Town, he was appointed to the University of Birmingham, from where he was awarded degrees of FRCP and FMedSci. He was elected Founder Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998.

He is a Non-Executive Director of University Hospital Birmingham Foundation Trust, Chair of the Board of Bioscientifica and recent President of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland. His national and international responsibilities have included Non-Executive Director of Birmingham Children's Hospital, Council member UK Society for Endocrinology, Royal College of Physicians Censor and member Clinical Excellence Awards Advisory Committee, member of Executive Committee of ESE, and Board Chair of European Journal of Endocrinology. His research has focussed on epidemiology and management of pituitary disease, evaluation of innovative therapies for acromegaly, and management of thyroid cancer.
