Neurosteroids refer to hormones with a steroid structure and, their synthesis pathways are identical to those of traditional steroids. However, neurosteroids are generated denovo in the central and peripheral nervous systems and utilize cell surface receptors. Few animal studies indicated synthesis of NS in pituitary.
