Delayed wound healing (WH), characterized by ischemia, is exacerbated by glucocorticoid (GC) excess. Local GC availability is regulated by the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) which generates the GC cortisol from inactive cortisone.
