Background: Disrupted thyroid hormone (TH) homeostasis has devastating effects on human neurodevelopment. THs are critical signaling molecules in neurodevelopment, acting on differentiation of neural cells, migration, synaptogenesis and myelination, with deiodinases governing intracellular TH concentrations in a spatiotemporal manner.
