Myxedema Coma: an uncommon presentation of a common thyroid problem

Munir Atif , Hutchison Caroline , Kumar Balakrishna , Anthony Sony

Myxedema coma has very high mortality and should be suspected in an acutely unwell patient presenting with depressed mental status who is hypothermic, bradycardic and or hypotensive. Myxedema coma may be the first presentation of people with undiagnosed hypothyroidism. Definitive management is with thyroid hormone but supportive measures, identification and treatment of precipitating factors in an appropriately safe environment are vital. There is no consensus about preferred ...

What you need to know about the genetics of hyperlipidaemia

Shoulders Carol , Hutchison Claire , Duncan Emma , Sivapackianathan Rasheeta

This presentation will consider the ways that modern genetics and lipidomics are beginning to increase our understanding of specific lipid disorders that bear on human disease, ranging from life-threatening conditions of infancy through severe coronary heart disease of young adulthood, to indolent disorders of middle- and old-age. The case will be made for replacing the traditional, but now 45-year-old, Fredrickson and Lees essentially phenotypic classification of hyperlipidae...

Androgen-dependent Sertoli cell proliferation as a target for endocrine disruptors relevant to human male reproductive health

Scott H , Hallmark N , Saunders PTK , Verhoeven G , De Gendt K , Hutchison G , Sharpe RM

Smoking by women during pregnancy can result in a 30–48% reduction in sperm count and testis size in the exposed offspring in adulthood, probably because of a decrease in the number of Sertoli cells. Until recently Sertoli cell proliferation was thought to be androgen independent because fetal Sertoli cells do not express the androgen receptor, but new evidence suggests that androgens may play the lead role in regulating Sertoli cell proliferation in fetal (Tan et al.<...
