Coexistence of metastatic osteosarcoma and multifocal papillary carcinoma in thyroid gland

Papadopoulos Fotios , Karakozis Lampros , Papadopoulos Spiros , Papadopoulos Theofanis , Karakozis Stavros

Background: The presence of secondary tumors to the thyroid is well known, although a rare entity (0.5–1.2%). The simultaneous appearance of papillary carcinoma and metastasis from hip osteosarcoma has never been reported.Case presentation: The patient is a 60 year old female who presented with a suspicious left thyroid nodule and a long history of osteosarcoma. The preoperative FNA of the left thyroid nodule was consistent with papillary malignancy...

Radioactive iodine therapy dose for recurrent thyrotoxicosis

Benamer Sufyan , Papadopoulos Manos , Mongolu Shiva , Htut Zin

Aim: To determine the current practice of radioiodine dose treatment provided in Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust, in line with the recommended guidelines of the Royal College of Physicians and published data. Methods: The medical records of the patients who received more than one dose of radioactive iodine for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis in Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust between 2006 and 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. The level of the bioche...

Quantitative and qualitative changes in T regulatory lymphocytes (Tregs) in newly-diagnosed patients with type 1 diabetes

Paschou Stavroula , Vartholomatos George , Kolaitis Nikolaos , Papadopoulos George , Tsatsoulis Agathocles

Introduction: T regulatory lymphocytes (Tregs) are defined as CD4+CD25high T lymphocytes and are thought to regulate immune tolerance. The Foxp3 protein level in Tregs is proportional to CD25 protein surface expression and regulatory function, but inversely proportional to IL-7R (CD127) level, the receptor for the growth and survival of T cells. We investigated possible differences in Tregs between newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes (DM1) patients and contro...

Field evaluation of a multi-sensor armband in Greek women

Papazoglou DP , Papazoglou LP , Papadopoulos TP , Papanas NP , Papatheodorou KP , Kotsiou SK , Maltezos EM

Objective: To examine the ability of a multisensor armband (SenseWear Pro 2 Armband™, Body Media, Pittsburgh, PA) to estimate daily energy expenditure (EE).Patients and methods: Eighteen healthy women (mean age:29.4±5.8 yr and mean BMI:23.2) participated in the study. Daily EE was estimated by the Sensewear Armband and a physical activity record (PAL) during the same day. Appropriate MET factors were assigned to the different activity categorie...

Radiological formula for differentiating between secreting and non secreting adrenal adenomas

Vicennati Valentina , Casadio Elena , Pagotto Uberto , Dalmazi Guido Di , Rinaldi Eleonora , Mosconi Cristina , Papadopoulos Dimitris , Golfieri Rita , Pasquali Renato

Introduction: Purpose of this study is to find a radiological score and to correlate radiological characteristics of adrenal adenomas and functional parameters to predict subclinical glucocorticoid secretion. Methods and materials: This retrospective study included 55 patients with adenomas, investigated through CT with adrenal protocol assessing diameters, HU values of the unenhanced and contrast enhanced phases (enhanced–E, and 15 min delayed enhan...

Phosphate levels inversely correlate with aortic stiffness in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism

Athanasouli Fanni , Papadopoulos Leonidas , Vemmou Anastasia , Chalaris Konstantine , Efthimiou Evelin , Athanasoulis Theodore , Papamichael Christos , Stamatelopulos Kimon , Terpos Evangelos , Alevizaki Maria

Introduction: Although data on the association of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) with cardiovascular disease are accumulating, there is still controversy on this issue. Moreover, possible associations of aortic stiffness and central aortic pressures with pHPT and associated effective molecules have not been addressed. Methods: Seventy patients with pHPT were consecutively recruited from the outpatients’ clinic of an academic department of endocri...

Correlation of preablative thyroglobulin to the new response to therapy system in differentiated thyroid cancer

Siolos Athanasios , Exadaktylou Paraskevi , Papadopoulos Nikitas , Poimenidou Irini , Rakitzi Pantelitsa , Tziomalos Konstantinos , Chatzipavlidou Vasiliki , Pazaitou-Panayiotou Kalliopi

Introduction: Evidence supports the prognostic value of preablative stimulated thyroglobulin (ps-Tg) for recurrent and persistent disease in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). The correlation of ps-Tg with therapeutic response however has been less studied. Objective: To study the correlation of ps-Tg and the trend of serial preablative thyroglobulin measurements(DTg) with the response to treatment restaging system proposed in 2015 America...

The role of stress related aldosterone secretion in essential hypertension

Markou Athina , Androulakis Ioannis , Gouli Aggeliki , Dimitriou Kostantina , Zacharoulis Achilleas , Papadopoulos Kostantinos , Barlogiannis Theodoros , Chariatis Evangelos , Halapas Antony , Kourlaba Eleni , Ragkou Despoina , Kondyli Georgia , Piaditis George

Introduction: Approximately 90% of the hypertensive population is characterized as having essential hypertension. Apart from renin and K+, ACTH plays an important role in aldosterone secretion, being a potent stimulant under situations of stress. Up to date, the association between stress and aldosterone-related hypertension has not been studied and that is the aim of our study. Methods: 36 hypertensive patients and 14 matched for age and sex c...

Chronic leg rash in Graves disease, not always pretibial myxedema

Pusalkar Pawan , Tringham Jenny , Bingham Emma

We describe a case of 38 year old female of Indian origin who presented with symptoms of Graves disease to our clinic. She had a diffusely enlarged goitre and minimal eye signs. Her T4 was 62 pmol/L(9–24), T3 9 pmol/L(3.5–6.5), and TSH was <0.01 mu/L (0.3–5.0). Radioactive iodine uptake scan revealed the presence of increased uptake throughout the gland. She was treated with carbimazole for 18 months and is in remission at present.Abou...
