Severe hypocalcemia after a single denosumab injection and tumor-induced persistent hypophosphatemia in a patient with metastatic prostate cancer

Aude Theunissen , Thierry Roumeguere , Bernard Corvilain , Aglaia Kyrilli

Case report: A 81-year-old male patient suffering from a Gleason 9 pT3aN0M0R1 prostatic adenocarcinoma was treated with radical prostatectomy and adjuvant radiotherapy in 2014. He presented in outpatient clinic for lumbar pain in October 2018. A 18F-NaF PET/CT showed diffuse metastatic bone involvement. Laboratory results showed hypophosphatemia (0.52 mmol/L, N: 0.75–1.39), normal renal function, normocalcemia (2.35 mmol/L, N: 2.20–2.55), normal 25-OH vitamin D (36 μg/L, N: 30...

Objectives: To systematically characterize autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFTN) by clinical, biological and imaging methods, cytology and histology when indicated.Design: Prospective, single-center study conducted from March 2018 until September 2021, in 901 consecutive patients with 67 AFTN evaluated. Methods: Enrolled patients underwent 99mTcO4 scintigraphy evaluation of thyroid function, ultrasound (US) usin...

Is it worthwhile to distinguish between grade 1 and grade 2 subclinical hyperthyroidism for alteration of metabolic parameters?

Nguyen T , Russo L , Kyrilli A , Moreno-Reyes R , Corvilain B

Aim of the work: The effects of subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCH) on bone and heart have been well documented. Effects on other parameters like lipids metabolism and weight regulation have also been reported but mainly in cross-sectional studies. The potential benefits of treatment of endogenous subclinical hyperthyroidism are more controversial as few large controlled studies on clinical outcomes have been performed. ATA guidelines recommend treatment according to the severit...

Impact of parathyroidectomy on calcium metabolism, bone mineral density and trabecular bone score in patients with non-syndromic primary hyperparathyroidism

Kardalas Efstratios , Ntali Georgia , Mouxtouris Panagiotis , Papachristou Aglaia , Tzanela Marinella

Background/aim: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is a relatively common endocrine disorder, which is associated with severe disruption of calcium metabolism and deterioration of bone density and quality. Our study aimed at examining the effect of parathyroidectomy on bone mineral density (BMD), T-Score in both the femoral neck (FN) and the lumbar spine (LS) and on trabecular bone score (TBS).Materials and methods: A cohort of 280 adult patients (195 ma...

Bone metabolism and bone mass density following successful treatment of catecholamine secreting tumors

Kardalas Efstratios , Ntali Georgia , Mouchtouris Panagiotis , Papachristou Aglaia , Lavrentaki Aikaterini , Tsagarakis Stylianos

Introduction: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas(PPGLs) are catecholamine-secreting tumors. Catecholamine excess contributes to bone resorption and secondary osteoporosis. PPGLs are treated surgically but limited data exists on the subsequent effect on bone status.Aim: To evaluate bone metabolism(BM) and bone mass density(BMD) before and after successful surgery of PPGLs.Methods: A retrospective study on (BM) of (PPGLs) patients ...

Background: An increasing number of mutations are associated with pheochromocytomas. Genetic screening is advocated in all cases and immunohistochemistry as well as phenotype profile recognition may permit a more targeted screening for specific genes.Case Presentation: A 54-year-old male presented with symptoms compatible with pheochromocytoma and increased levels of plasma normetanephrines, metanephrines and 3-methoxytyramine. On Computed Tomography, th...

Introduction: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the most common cause of endocrine hypertension. Its prevalence varies from 5-15%, which depends mainly on the cut-offs of the diagnostic tests.Aim: To estimate the prevalence of PA in patients with different stages of hypertension based on a dynamic overnight diagnostic test. Methods: One hundred ninety nine hypertensive patients were divided in 3 groups according to the stage of hyperten...

Renin: a possible novel marker for the efficacy of pharmacological treatment of primary aldosteronism

Voulgaris Nikolaos , Vlachou Sofia , Kyriazi Evangelia , Papaoikonomou Eleni , Tyfoxylou Ernestini , Monastirioti Nikoletta , Kapsali Chara , Zachaki Aglaia , Charalampidou Liana , Kounadi Theodora , Markou Athina , Papanastasiou Labrini , Giagourta Eirini , Kassi Eva , Kaltsas Gregory , Piaditis George

Introduction: Primary aldosteronism (PA) treatment is either pharmacological with aldosterone receptor antagonists (MRAs) or surgical with the resection of the responsible adenoma. The efficacy of MRAs treatment is based on the normalization of blood pressure (BP) in relation to potassium levels. However, it remains unclear whether the stimulation of renin levels during treatment could serve as an additional marker of adequate MR blockade.Aim: To investi...
