Eight healthy pregnant goats, aged 2-4 years, were selected for this study. Blood samples were obtained in tubes containing EDTA at different stages of pregnancy, at parturition and on days 1, 7 and 14 postpartum. Blood from foeti was also collected on days 1 and 7 after their birth. Plasma was separated, frozen at -20 celsius till analysed for thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) using ELISA comercial kits. Thyroxine (T4) concentration was higher during prepartum, decreased significantly at parturition and again increased on day 1 postpartum. On day 14 postpartum T4 concentration was not different as compared to prepartum values. T3 concentration did not change at parturition, however, it increased on day 1 postpartum and was normal on day 14 after parturition. T3 and T4 were significantly lower in foetus having length of 7 cm as compared to 10 cm foetal length. Overall T3 and T4 concentration were significantly higher in young growing male and female fetus.
