Objectives: Examine the relationship between choroidal thickness (CT) and renal function tests.

Methods: Cross-sectional study with 42 eyes of 21 ocular treatment-naïve diabetic patients. Demographic and ocular data were analyzed as well as the following renal function tests: microalbuminuria, microalbumin/creatinine ratio and glomerular filtration rate (CKD-EPI and MDRD-4). Choroidal thickness was measured by swept-source ocular coherence tomography (SS OCT).

Results: The mean age was 49.76±17.61 years old (18–74), with a sex ratio of approximately 1:1. 66.7% suffered from type 2 diabetes mellitus, with a mean time of evolution of 12.14±10.08 years. 51.2% of patients didn’t present diabetic retinopathy. Among renal function tests, only microalbuminuria positively correlated with CT (P<0.05).

Conclusions: The analysis of CT with SS OCT could be a prediction tool of renal function in diabetic patients.
