Skeletal cell metabolism: more than bioenergetics and bystander effect

Bone development, remodeling and repair are metabolically very demanding processes. Chondrogenic and osteogenic cells are highly anabolic as they have a high proliferation rate and produce a substantial amount of extracellular matrix.
