A case of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome with delayed puberty

Muralidhara Koteshwara , Kumar Jesse , Barnes Dennis , Goulden Peter

We report a case of a 20-year-old male with a clinical profile of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome with delayed puberty. This 20-year-old man had learning disablitiy, macrocephaly and multiple jaw cysts. His other clinical features included agenesis of the carpus callosum, obesity and multiple cutaneous lesions suggestive of angiolipomata. His pubertal development was delayed although a LHRH test done at the age of 16 showed a normal response. Radiological features included macrocephaly,...

Is vertical growth still possible at the age of 30?

Mon Aung , Saunders Simon , Whittingham Pauline , Vora Jiten

A 28-year-man originally from Africa presented with short stature. His height at first clinic visit was 128 cm and there was no family history of short stature. He had pale complexion, lack of facial/body hair and under-developed secondary sexual characteristics consistent with morphology of hypopituitaric dwarfism. Insulin stress test with adequate hypoglycaemia<2.2 mmol/l confirmed flat growth hormone (GH) response (peak <0.5 mU/l) and inadequate cortisol response (p...

Improvement in exercise capacity following growth hormone (GH) replacement in GH-deficient patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Widdowson Matt , Gibney James

Growth hormone (GH) replacement in GH-deficient adults exerts clear effects on body composition, but there is a lack of high-quality evidence concerning its functional effects which may be clinically more important. This meta-analysis is carried out to determine the effects of GH replacement on exercise performance. A Medline search and examination of reference lists of included studies and relevant review articles identified 11 studies with utilizable, robust data, involving ...

Age of pubertal stages in a representative sample of Iranian girls

Hashemipour Mahin , Kashani Hessam H , Kavosh Morvarid S

Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2006 among 3204 girls, aged 6 to 17, and living in Isfahan, Iran. Participants were selected by multistage random cluster probability-sampling. A pediatric endocrinologist determined Pubertal stages by inspection and palpation according to Marshall and Tanner staging. The self-reported information was collected for occurrence and age of menarche. The percentiles of different pubertal stages w...

The effect of galanin on the mean plasma concentrations of metabolic hormones in camel

Khazali Homayoun

The goal of this study was to determine whether galanin affects the mean plasma concentrations of metabolic parameters such as thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), growth hormone (GH), insulin, glucagon, glucose, fatty acid and urea in the camels fed different energy content in diets. Twenty four camels were randomly divided into three main groups. Animals of all groups were fed either 25, 50 or 100% energy content in diet for 30 days. After 30 days, camels were received dai...

Height and body proportions of women with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome and women with gonadal dysgenesis

Han TS , Goswami D , Trikudanathan S , Creighton SM , Conway GS

Objectives: To compare height and body proportions between women with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) and women with gonadal dysgenesis (GD).Design: Cross-sectional study of three groups of women with varying degrees of exposure to sex hormones and different combinations of sex chromosomes. Fourteen subjects had CAIS and 46XY (CAIS(XY)), aged (mean±S.E.M.) 42.1±2.8 years; seven had GD and 46XY (GD(XY)), aged 36.7&...

Growth retardation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is not universally associated with growth hormone resistance

Wong SC , Smyth A , McNeill E , Hassan K , McGrogan P , Ahmed SF

Background and aim: It is often proposed that growth retardation in IBD is associated with a state of growth hormone resistance but published data on the GH-IGF1 axis are scarce. We describe the results of routine clinical assessment of this axis in a group of such children. Methods: A retrospective study of 24 children with IBD (22 CD, 2 UC) with growth retardation and/or pubertal delay who underwent insulin tolerance test (ITT) following referral to the...

Expression of thyroid hormone transporters in the human fetal cerebral cortex

Chan Shiao , Martin-Santos Azucena , Loubiere Laurence , Vasilopoulou Elisavet , James Sally , McCabe Chris , Franklyn Jayne , Kilby Mark

The importance of thyroid hormone (TH) transporters to central nervous system (CNS) development has been highlighted by reports of severe global neurological impairment associated with mutations in the potent TH transporter, MCT8. Even subclinical maternal hypothyroidism in early pregnancy has been associated with long-term neurodevelopmental delay in the offspring suggesting that TH is crucial for early fetal brain development. The cellular entry of TH requires the function o...

Attempted detection of recombinant glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored proteins using Fluorescently Labelled Aerolysin, FLAER

Kaabi Yahia , Wilkinson Ian , Richards Gareth , Skerry Tim , Ross Richard

Introduction: Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored proteins are common on the surfaces of eukaryotic cells. An example is alkaline phosphatase. Fluorescently Labelled Aerolysin (FLAER) is a bacterial toxin produced by the gram-negative bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila that binds naturally to GPI anchored proteins and utilizes them as receptors to cause cytotoxicity. FLAER has been used to discriminate the GPI deficient red blood cells in cases of paroxysmal nocturn...
