Aims: Because of an increased metabolic activity and thermogenesis in hyperthyroidism, we aimed to evaluate the association of serum irisin with thyroid hormones.

Methods: A total of 25 hyperthyroid patients and 24 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Serum irisin levels, thyroid hormones and body compositions were analyzed.

Results: Serum irisin levels were significantly higher in hyperthyroid group (P<0.001). Distribution of fat free mass and muscle mass was similar between study groups. Serum irisin level has a negative correlation with TSH level (P<0.001), %fat mass (P=0.021) and positive correlation with TSH receptor antibody (TRAB) level (P=0.002).

Conclusion: Our results showed that increased serum irisin levels in hyperthyroid patients might be associated with the effects of TSH.
