Sulfasalazine as a cause of false positive elevation of normetanephrine in patients with adrenal mass – A diagnostic challenge

Ter Zuling Eunice , Balasubramanian Sabapathy

In clinical settings, when biochemical screening revealed grossly elevated urinary normetanephrine and metanephrine in the presence of an adrenal mass, there is a high clinical suspicion of a pheochromocytoma. However, sulfasalazine, an anti-inflammatory drug can cause analytical drug interference, leading to falsely positive elevation of urinary normetanephrine and a misdiagnosis of phantom pheochromocytoma. This report illustrates two patients with adrenal mass who had false...

Screening for subclinical Cushing’s Syndrome in Malaysians with metabolic syndrome: A single center, cross-sectional study

Lau Eunice , Hussein Zanariah

BackgroundPatients with Subclinical Cushing’s Syndrome (SCS) share many similarities with those of metabolic syndrome. Several studies have shown variable prevalence of SCS in patients with diabetes and obesity of up to 9% suggesting that it may be more common in these patients. Our study aims to explore the prevalence of SCS in Malaysians with metabolic syndrome and examine any possible predicting factors. Methods<p class=...

Humoral Hypercalcaemia in pregnancy

Maharajh Anjanie , Wiafe Eunice , Haniff Haliza

We report a 32-year-old primigravida with type 2 diabetes and large uterine fibroid who was found to have incidental, asymptomatic, non-PTH driven hypercalcaemia of 2.67 mmol/l (NR 2.2-2.60 mmol/l) at 7 weeks gestation. Investigations revealed no evidence of malignancy. Interestingly, following initial blood test, her calcium normalised but with persistent complete suppression of PTH until 19 weeks gestation, when her calcium rose to 3.25 mmol/l. Successful spontaneous pregnancy after transphenoidal surgery and bilateral adrenalectomy for Cushing’s disease: A case report

Shonibare Tolulope , Kyriakakis Nikolaos , Rajagopalan Chitra , Wiafe Eunice

Introduction: Cushing’s syndrome can impair the gonadotrophic axis in women of child bearing age if left untreated. Furthermore undergoing endoscopic transphenoidal surgery can render patients hypogonadal, thereby reducing the chances of spontaneous conception. In such cases, pregnancy is usually achieved by assisted contraceptive techniques. We present a case of spontaneous pregnancy following transphenoidal surgery and bilateral adrenalectomy.Case...

However, exact mechanisms which could explain these findings among Filipino patients remain to be poorly understood. The risk factors associated with disease recurrence among adult Filipino patients with low-risk papillary thyroid cancer in Manila Doctors Hospital was assessed in this study.<p cl...
