Trabecular bone score and specific bone turnover markers in high-dose glucocorticoid therapy among individuals with graves’ orbitopathy

Gojny Lukasz , Kuliczkowska-Płaksej Justyna , Jawiarczyk-Przybyłowska Aleksandra , Halupczok-Żyła Jowita , Bolanowski Marek

The Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) has recently been developed through the grayscale textural analysis of Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) images. Due to its capability to evaluate the microarchitectural texture of bone, TBS proves valuable in the assessment of bone quality. While the clinical relevance of TBS has been partially confirmed in relation to hormonal disorders, there is currently a lack of precise data regarding its application during specific phases of treatmen...

FTO gene polymorphisms and their role in acromegaly

Jawiarczyk-Przybyłowska Aleksandra , Kuliczkowska-Płaksej Justyna , Halupczok-Żyła Jowita , Kolačkov Katarzyna , Zembska Agnieszka , Zdrojowy-Wełna Aleksandra , Bolanowski Marek

Acromegaly is characterized by two-fold higher mortality than in the general population. The leading causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with acromegaly are cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Many population-based studies suggest a role of genetic background in CVD and associated metabolic disturbances. In 2007, FTO (fat mass and obesity associated) gene polymorphisms were discovered. According to a few studies, the polymorphisms of FTO gene are associated with ...

Aldosterone/direct renin ratio (ADRR) in the screening of patients with primary aldosteronism

Szatko Alicja , Leszczynska Dorota , Badura Barbara , Barczak Szymon , Filipek Kinga , Hempel Justyna , Ostrowska Magdalena , Papierska Lucyna , Zgliczyński Wojciech , Glinicki Piotr

Background: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the most common endocrine cause of secondary hypertension. It occurs in 5%-10% of hypertensive patients. PA is a group of disorders associated with semi-autonomous hypersecretion of aldosterone. Laboratory diagnosis in patients with suspected PA consists of screening tests aimed at determination of serum/plasma aldosterone concentration, direct renin concentration (DRC) and calculation of the aldosterone/direct renin ratio (ADRR). The ...

VCAM-1 concentration in patients 6 months after SARS-Cov2 infection

Jawiarczyk-Przybyłowska Aleksandra , Kuliczkowska-Płaksej Justyna , Zdrojowy-Wełna Aleksandra , Kolačkov Katarzyna , Zembska Agnieszka , Bolanowski Marek

Objectives: The excessive production of pro-inflammatory cytokines has been previously reported in the severe form of COVID-19. The cytokine storm is responsible for the induction of an inflammatory endothelial cell phenotype which is associated with the shedding of adhesion molecules. VCAM-1 is an endothelial adhesion protein that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily. Pro-inflammatory cytokines lead to the induction of VCAM-1 in the endothelium of blood vessels which is ...

Objective: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is hypothesized to originate in foetal life, while its long-term consequences extend beyond menopause. However, the natural course of the disorder has not as yet been elucidated, and recent data suggest differences in the evolution of PCOS according to a woman’s weight. We aimed to define the evolution of normal-weight Caucasian women with PCOS through the years.Design: Cross-sectional case control study</...
