Erdheim-Chester disease and papillary thyroid carcinoma: case report of a common association in a rare disease

Aparicio David , Martins Nuno , Leichsenring Carlos , Rodrigues Alice , Joao Ana , Soares Antonio , Fragoso Marta , Marinho Rui , Rocha Ricardo , Sousa Marta , Gouminski Serguei , Sobrinho Cisaltina , Dias Wima , Afonso Enio , Geraldes Vasco , Nunes Vitor

Introdution: Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare multisystemic form of Non-langerhans cell histiocytosis CD67 positive, with approximately 550 published cases. Papillary carcinoma is the most common thyroid cancer with BRAF V600E the most common mutation. Both diseases may be associated to BRAF V600E mutation. If Erdheim- Chester disease is positive to this mutation on histiocytes, a specific pharmacolgical treatment is available, (vemurafenib), with better results.<p class=...

Aldosterone-producing adrenocortical carcinoma and alteration of secretion pattern on recurrence: a case report

Ferreira Joana Lima , Marques Ana Paula , Sottomayor Carlos , Valente Vitor

Introduction: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare neoplasm with a variable but overall poor prognosis. The presentation is heterogeneous usually with mass effect and less often with evidence of hormonal secretion. About half of cases the tumors are hormonally active most commonly with cortisol secretion followed by sexual hormones production, being rare the aldosterone secretion.Case report: A 41-year-old male presented with hypertensive crisis and ...

Importance of central compartment neck metastasis in the differentiated thyroid microcarcinomas

Cunha Catia , Guedes Vitor , Garrao Antonio , Cid Olimpia

: Elective central compartment neck dissection in the treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinomas (CDT) remains controversial. In a series of 1500 patients undergoing thyroid surgery, the authors evaluated the prognosis related to central compartment neck metastasis in differentiated microcarcinomas....

DHEA reduces the palmitate-induced apoptosis in L6 myotubes

Felitti Vitor , Spiazzi Gabriela , Teixeira Caio , Carvalho Carla

Introduction: DHEA and its sulfated form (DHEAS) are the most abundant steroid in humans, produced mainly by the adrenal cortex, converted to androgens and estrogens in peripheral tissues by tissue-specific steroidogenic enzymes. There are experimental evidences indicating DHEA anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative effects in cell lines, animal models, and human.Aim: The aim of this study was analyse the protective effect of DHEA in the ske...

Incidence of thyroid cancer in the gray bethesda categories

Barbosa Berta , da Costa Moreira , Valente Vitor , Borges Fatima , Carvalho Andre

Objective: The recommendations for action in a Bethesda category III are to repeat the cytology or to perform molecular tests, and if these are inconclusive, surveillance or surgical indication may be maintained, depending on the risk factors, ultrasound characteristics of the nodule and patient preference. In case of category IV of Bethesda, the recommendation is the surgery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of age, gender and nodule size on the incidenc...

Is prophylactic central cervical dissection in papillary carcinoma of the thyroid justified?

Barbosa Berta , da Costa Moreira , Valente Vitor , Borges Fatima , Carvalho Andre

Objective: Thyroid cancer is the most common of the endocrine tumors, with papillary being the most frequent. There is no consensus about prophylactic central cervical dissection in patients with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid. The aim of this study is to analyze surgical complications and the rate of recurrence of papillary carcinoma in patients undergoing total thyroidectomy and prophylactic central cervical dissection, and patients submitted to total thyroidectomy alone...

Insulin resistance does not play a major role in lipid and apolipoprotein profile in obese women

Silva-Nunes Jose , Brito Miguel , Veiga Luisa

Background: Obesity is associated with increased atherogenesis through alterations in lipids, among other potential factors. Some of those abnormalities might be mediated by insulin resistance (IR).Aims: To compare lipid and apolipoprotein profile between lean and obese women; to evaluate the influence of IR on lipid and apolipoprotein profile, in obese women. Methods: We studied 112 obese and 100 normal-weight premenopausal women w...

Acromegalic arthropathy: clinical presentation, treatment and quality of life

Nunes Joana Menezes , Rodrigues Elisabete , Carvalho Davide

Introduction: Arthropathy affects the majority of acromegalic patients and is a major cause of morbidity, absenteeism and impaired quality of life. GH excess and increased levels of circulating IGFI result initially in a marked thickening of the soft tissues and cartilage. Along with disease progression, there’s subperiostal bone neoapposition, cartilage regressive phenomena and bone structural changes. We aimed to investigate prevalence, clinical presentation, treatment ...

Late-onset hypoparathyroidism 15 years after thyroidectomy

Nunes Joana Menezes , Rodrigues Elisabete , Carvalho Davide

Introduction: Post-surgical hypoparathyroidism is a well known complication of total thyroidectomy. It may occur as transitory hypoparathyroidism that spontaneously recover within a few weeks/months and as permanent hypoparathyroidism needing long-term treatment. Only few cases of hypoparathyroidism newly diagnosed many years after surgery have been reported. We present a patient with hypoparathyroidism that became clinically evident 15 years after the thyroid surgery.<p c...

T3 acts posttranscriptionally reducing the poly(a) tail length and the translational rate of alpha and beta TSH mRNA in TαT1 cells

Souza P. , Silva F. , Nunes M.

Recent data have shown that, in parallel to its transcriptional action down-regulating TSH synthesis, triiodothyronine (T3) also acts on posttranscriptional steps of beta TSH synthesis, reducing the polyadenylation and translational rate of the beta TSH mRNA, when acutely administered to thyroidectomized rats. This study aimed to investigate whether these effects also occur in TalphaT1 cells, and if they are dependent on gene transcription, which would characterize ...
