17alpha hydroxylase deficiency accounts for less than 1% of all patients diagnosed with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Almost 100 mutations in the CYP17A1 gene causing 17-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase deficiency (17OHD) have been described (OMIM 609300). CYP17A1 is expressed in both the adrenals and gonads.
