Monogenic diabetes is estimated to account for 1-2% of all diabetes cases diagnosed before the age of 45. It is caused by mutations in genes encoding for beta cell development, function and regulation. We present three cases of monogenic diabetes in pregnancy.Case 1: Age 30, Para 3, White ethnicity. This individual was screened for a GCK mutation at 18 weeks gestation (third pregnancy) on the basis of family history. She required metformin and insulin to...

Male pseudohermaphroditism with 45,X/46,X,idic(Y) karyotype: a case presenting with dysgenetic testis on one side and almost normally sized testis on the other side

Di Bari Flavia , Vita Roberto , Benvenga Salvatore

: Dicentric Y chromosome [idic(Y)] is the most common structural abnormality of this chromosome, and generally results from altered meiotic breakage and reunion of sister chromatids. Since this rearrangement is unstable, idic(Y) may be lost in subsequent cell cycles, resulting in a mosaic 45,X cell line. Variable are the phenotype and gonads (from streak gonads to ovotestes or dysgenetic testes). Few cases of 45,X/46,X,idic(Y) male pseudohermaphroditism with testes have been r...

Impact of the introduction of minimally invasive treatments of the thyroid (MITT) for benign thyroid nodules in an italian hospital: a cost-minimization analysis

Novizio Roberto , Cicia Martina , Papi Giampaolo

Background: Thyroid nodules prevalence is high in adult population, approaching 60% in women and older people. Most thyroid nodules are benign and asymptomatic. However, a not negligible part of them causes compressive symptoms and/or cosmetic concerns and need treatment. In the last decades, minimally invasive treatments of the thyroid (MITT) have been proposed in clinical practice as reliable cost-effective alternative to surgery in patients with symptomatic benign thyroid n...

Objectives: The use of levothyroxine (LT4) treatment aiming to improve fertility in euthyroid women with positive thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), is not supported by the available evidence, however the extent to which this is applied in clinical practice is unknown. The aim of the study was to document the demographic, work-related characteristics, and therapeutic choices of European physicians in the case of euthyroid infertile women positive for TPOAb.<p class="ab...

Background: Overweight and obesity are an increasing concern for public health worldwide. Obesity is a chronic, progressive and relapsing disease associated with the development of several comorbidities which may improve after weight loss. The first step in the management of weight excess includes life-style modifications but, in the long-term, obesity is frequently resistant to life-style changes only. Surgical procedures and medical treatments have, therefore, been developed...
