Adrenal lesions - the importance of a careful evaluation

Dias Daniela , Figueiredo Ines , Duarte Cristina , Serra FIlipa , Leichsenring Carlos , Tavora Isabel , Paulo Fernandes Joao , Sapinho Ines

Most differential diagnoses of unilateral adrenal lesions include non-functional adenoma, adrenocortical carcinoma or pheochromocytoma. Primary adrenal lymphoma(PAL) is an extremely uncommon type of primary extranodal non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma(<1%). Most cases are bilateral (~75%), being unilateral PAL scarcely reported. The apparent unilateral involvement of this entity at presentation, in the CT scan/MRI may difficult the diagnosis, delaying the start of chemotherapy. ...

Malignancy rate in thyroid nodules with AUS/FLUS cytology in a Cancer Center (Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology 2009)

Nunes Joana Menezes , Martins Raquel , Santos Jacinta , Martins Teresa , Moniz Ana Paula , Ilheu Olga , Figueiredo Paulo , Rodrigues Fernando

Introduction: The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology is the standard for interpreting fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and created a new diagnostic category (III): ‘atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance’ (AUS/FLUS). The risk of malignancy for this category has been ascribed of 5–15% but the real malignancy rate remains unclear and plays a key role to define appropriate management.Ob...

Malignant hypercalcemia – A rare case associated with abdominal liposarcoma

Figueiredo Ana , Damasio Ines , Cavaco Daniela , Simões Helder , Simões-Pereira Joana , Leite Valeriano

Background: Malignant hypercalcemia (MH) occurs in up to 30% of patients who are diagnosed with cancery, being associated with later stages of the disease and poor prognosis. The physiopathological mechanisms responsible for MH are the production of parathyroid hormone-related peptide by the tumor (PTHrp) (80% of cases), osteolytic cytokine production (20%) and excess of 1,25(OH)2vitamin D production (1%).Case report: We present the case of a ...

Fetal sex predicts perinatal outcomes in women with gestational diabetes

Cidade-Rodrigues Catarina , Chaves Catarina , Melo Anabela , Figueiredo Odete , Morgado Ana , Almeida M Ceu , Martinho Mariana , Almeida Margarida , Cunha Filipe M

Introduction: Gestational diabetes (GD) is a known risk factor for delivery, fetal and perinatal complications. Fetal male sex is known to be associated with worse perinatal outcomes, such as macrosomia, neonatal hypoglycemia, low Apgar scores, birth defects and mortality. However, studies evaluating the impact of fetal sex on perinatal outcomes in women with GD are scarce. Objectives: We aimed to study whether male newborn sex is associated with neonata...

Predictors of missing postpartum reclassification OGTT in women with gestational diabetes

Cidade-Rodrigues Catarina , Cunha Filipe , Chaves Catarina , Pereira Catarina , Paredes Silvia , Vieira Margarida , Melo Anabela , Figueiredo Odete , Morgado Ana , Martinho Mariana , Almeida M. Ceu , Almeida Margarida

Introduction: Women with gestational diabetes (GD) have an increased risk of developing future type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A reclassification oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is currently recomended in the postpartum period. However, most studies report a compliance rate below 50% and as low as 23%.Objectives: We aimed to study predictors of missing postpartum OGTT in women with GD.Materials and Methods: Retrospecti...

Number of gestational diabetes risk factors associates with adverse pregnancy outcomes

Chaves Catarina , Cidade-Rodrigues Catarina , Melo Anabela , Figueiredo Odete , Morgado Ana , Almeida M. Ceu , Martinho Mariana , Almeida Margarida , Cunha Filipe M

Introduction: There are several known risk factors for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a condition associated with worse pregnancy outcomes. Once GDM is established, the association between the presence of GDM risk factors and pregnancy outcomes is less well-known. We studied the association between the number of GDM risk factors and pregnancy outcomes in a population of women with GDM.Methods: Retrospective study of the Portuguese multicentre GDM r...

Reactive oxygen species as a novel metabolic pathway for sperm DNA damage and Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

Radia Utsav K , Jayasena Channa N , Figueiredo Monica , Revill Larissa Franklin , Dimakopoulou Anastasia , Osagie Maria , Vessey Wayne , Regan Lesley , Rai Rajendra , Dhillo Waljit S

Background: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) affects 1–2% couples, and is defined as ≧3 consecutive pregnancy losses before 20-weeks’ gestation. RPL is caused by foetal chromosomal abnormalities, or maternal factors such as thrombophilia. It was recently reported that men with RPL have high levels of sperm DNA fragmentation (a marker of infertility); however, the cause of this damage is currently not known. Seminal plasma has high levels of granulocyte-derived o...

Efficacy and safety of lenvatinib in a cohort of well-differentiated advanced thyroid carcinomas

Damasio Ines , Maciel Joana , Figueiredo Ana , Simoes Helder , Nunes da Silva Tiago , Simoes-Pereira Joana , Horta Mariana , Santos Rita , Donato Sara , Leite Valeriano

Introduction: Treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) remains a challenge in the setting of locally advanced or metastatic disease refractory to radiodine (RAI) therapy. SELECT trial demonstrated that Lenvatinib improved progression free survival (PFS) comparing to placebo. Objective: Our aim is to report the efficacy and safety of lenvatinib in our population with aggressive DTC.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the ...

Lymph node metastasis of differentiated thyroid cancer: role of thyroglobulin in the washout fluid of fine-needle aspiration biopsies

Marques Bernardo , Martins Raquel , Cunha Nuno , Couto Joana , Santos Jacinta , Martins Teresa , Moniz Ana Paula , Ilheu Olga , Bastos Joana , Figueiredo Paulo , Valido Frederico , Rodrigues Fernando

Introduction: Thyroglobulin (Tg) measurement in needle washouts from fine-needle aspiration biopsies (FNA-Tg) increases the sensitivity of lymph node (LN) metastasis diagnosis in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). However, the cutoff value for FNA-Tg has not been clearly established and there are large differences between clinical studies, which hinders its interpretation. Our study aimed to investigate the optimal cutoff value of FNA-Tg and evaluate its utility in the diagn...
