Adulthood germ cell tumor: a case report

Menezes Nunes Joana , Rodrigues Elisabete , Pereira Josue , Portugal Raquel , Castro Ligia , Bernardes Irene , Osorio Ligia , Faria Olinda , Carvalho Davide

Introduction: Germ cell tumors (GCTs) are classified as extragonadal if there is no evidence of a primary tumor in the gonads. They typically occur in the midline structures. Newly diagnosed adult cases of pituitary or pineal glands germinomas are very rare since most of the cases are diagnosed in the mid teens, presenting 14:1, on behalf of the male gender. The estimated incidence of this tumor in western countries is between 0.4–3.4%, being more frequent in the Asia.</p...

Subclinical autoimmune thyroid disease and cardiovascular risk factors

Neves Celestino , Esteves Cesar , Pereira Miguel , Palmares Carmo , Sokhatsha Oksana , Dias Camila , Delgado Luis , Carvalho Davide , Luis Medina Jose

Objective: To examine whether Graves’ disease (GD) and autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) are associated with insulin resistance and other cardiovascular risk factors.Subjects and methods: We recorded thyroid function tests, BMI, insulin resistance markers comprising the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR and HOMA-B), the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI), hepatic insulin sensitivity index (HISI), whole-body i...

Subclinical hypothyroidism, autoimmune thyroiditis, and cardiovascular risk factors

Pereira Teresa , Neves Celestino , Esteves Cesar , Camila Dias Claudia , Pereira Miguel , Sokhatska Oksana , Delgado Luis , Carvalho Davide , Luis Medina Jose

Aim: To evaluate the relationship between autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT), subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and cardiovascular risk factors.Patients and methods: We recorded thyroid function tests, BMI, insulin resistance markers comprising the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR and HOMA-B), the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI), hepatic insulin sensitivity index (HISI), whole-body insulin sensitivity index (WBI...

Central diabetes insipidus: about two clinical cases

Nogueira C. , Matos M. , Esteves C. , Jorge G. , Couto J. , Neves C. , Queiros J. , Vinha E. , Bernardes I. , Carvalho D.

Introduction: Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is produced by the destruction of the magnocellular neurons of the hypothalamic supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei which results in decreased arginine vasopressin (AVP) synthesis and secretion.Case report 1: Forty-five year old female, previously healthy, was observed in April 2011 complaining of polydipsia, polyuria, nocturia and weight loss since January. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was excluded and she was ...

Autoimmune thyroid disease and cardiovascular risk factors

Neves C. , Esteves C. , Pereira M. , Dias C. , Palmares C. , Sokhatska O. , Carvalho D. , Delgado L. , Medina J.

Aims: To examine whether Graves’ disease (GD) and Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) are associated with insulin resistance (IR) and other cardiovascular risk factors. Patients and methods: We analyzed 479 patients with autoimmune thyroid disease, 354 (74%) with HT and 126 (26%) with GD, 94% woman, with a mean age of 46±16 years. The patients in both groups were properly treated in order to normalize TSH, FT3 and FT4 levels. We recorded thyroid function...

Laminin and poly-laminin, a polymeric form of laminin assembled at acidic pH, differentially modulate PCCL3 thyroid cell behavior

Palmero C. , Barroso M. , Souza E. , Merlmestein C. , Takiya C. , Carvalho D. , Miranda-Alves L. , Nasciutti L.

The extracellular matrix protein laminin forms polymers both in vivo and in vitro. Acidification of pH leads to the formation of an artificial polymer with biomimetical properties, named poly-laminin (polyLM). Follicular cells in the thyroid are in close contact with laminin, but their response to this important extracellular signal is still poorly understood. Thyroid PCCL3 epithelial cells cultivated either on glass, regular laminin (LM) or laminin previously po...

Diabetes insipidus in the context of sarcoidosis: a case report

Mesquita J , Rodrigues P , Belo S , Sousa A , Varela A , Magalhaes A , Castedo J L , Melo N , Mota Patricia , Carvalho Davide

Introduction: Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology with a prevalence of 10–20/100 000 individuals and affects mainly young adults. Neurological involvement occurs in about 5% of the cases and it can affect the hypothalamic–pituitary axis. In this case, the most common endocrine manifestations are hyperprolactinemia and diabetes insipidus.Case report: A 44-year-old male patient complaining of not feeling well and d...

Prospective evaluation of traumatic brain injury mediated hypopituitarism 1 year after the event

Santos Jacinta , Carvalho Miguel , Paiva Isabel , Baptista Carla , Ferro Carlos , Vieira Alexandra , Alves Marcia , Gouveia Sofia , Carvalheiro Manuela

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is considered a rare cause of pituitary dysfunction. Recently, some retrospective studies demonstrated that TBI-mediated hypopituitarism is more frequent than previously known. However, its prevalence and natural history are still unclear. Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of hypopituitarism 1 year after TBI and the association between the seriousness of the traumatism and the pituitary deficits.<p class...

Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis – case report

Souto Selma B , Matos Maria J , Freitas Paula , Queiros Joana , Magalhaes Angela , Carvalho-Braga Daniel , Medina Jose Luis

Introduction: Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis(AIT) is a condition fraught with difficulties from the diagnostic and therapeutic standpoints. It can be developed precociously or years after the beginning amiodarone uptake and after its suspension. AIT is subdivided in three different forms. Type 1 is developed in subjects with underlying thyroid disease, being caused by an exacerbation by iodine load of thyroid autonomous function. Type 2 is a form of destructive thyroiditis ...

Stromal luteoma of the ovary: case report

Souto Selma B , Carvalho-Braga Daniel , Baptista Pedro Vieira , Fernandes Ana S , Beires Jorge , Medina Jose Luis

Introduction: The stromal luteoma of the ovary is a rare tumour occurring mostly in post menopausal women. Endocrine symptoms and sometimes virilizing signs may be observed, although abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most frequent manifestation. This tumour is surrounded by ovarian stroma being entirely composed of luteinized cells devoid of crystals of Reinke. Hyperthecosis of ovarian stroma is often observed. Its evolution is always benign.Case report: ...
