Evaluation of the of alpha2-adrenergic receptors stimulation effect on copeptin secretion, based on the result of the test with clonidine used in the diagnosis of children with short stature

Stawerska Renata , Kolasa-Kicińska Marzena , Krygier Adrian , Hilczer Maciej , Lewinski Andrzej

Introduction: Copeptin can be used as a tool to directly assess serum antidiuretic hormone (ADH) level. A certain pool of ADH are synthesized in hypothalamus, together with corticoliberin (CRH). Then they are released into the pituitary portal circulation, where through the V1bR receptor ADH stimulates adrenocorticotropic cells and ACTH secretion, followed by cortisol and catecholamines production. The stimulus for ADH secretion is, among others, stress. In turn, presynaptic s...

Successful treatment of thyrotoxicosis is accompanied by a decrease in serum sclerostin levels

Skowronska-Jozwiak E. , Krawczyk-Rusiecka K. , Lewandowski K. , Adamczewski Z. , Bienkiewicz M. , Lewinski A.

Sclerostin, a product of a SOST gene, is a protein expressed by osteocytes that inhibits osteoblastic bone formation. Several hormones including PTH and glucocorticosteroids and have been suggested as possible regulators of sclerostin production. The influence of thyroid hormones on sclerostin synthesis has not been investigated so far. The aim of the study was to evaluate sclerostin concentrations in patients before and after treatment of thyrotoxicosis.<p class="abstext"...

Is thyroid volume (TV) in children related to the urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in urine spot sample?

Trofimiuk-Muldner M. , Buziak-Bereza M. , Sokolowski G. , Zygmunt A. , Adamczewski Z. , Szybinski Z. , Lewinski A. , Hubalewska-Dydejczyk A.

Goiter prevalence (GP) and median UIC in population studies are both considered markers of iodine nutrition. Controversy exists which of them is more reliable.Aim: To assess correlation between UIC and thyroid volume in Polish schoolchildren.Material and methods: 9402 Polish schoolchildren (51.3% girls, 48.7% boys) aged 6–12 years were examined in 1999–2011 (‘Thyromobil’ action). 40.9% of children were born at l...

Evaluation of age and sex influence on the morphometric parameters of vertebrae in densitometric morphometry – results of EPOLOS study

Skowronska-Jozwiak Elzbieta , Lewinski Andrzej , Pludowski Pawel , Karczmarewicz Elzbieta , Lorenc Roman

Vertebral morphometric X-ray absorptiometry (MXA) is a new tool developed to evaluate the presence of vertebral fractures – main symptoms of osteoporosis. The study aimed at comparing selected morphometric parameters of vertebrae in men and women in various age groups. 965 healthy persons have been involved in the study: 616 female and 349 male, their age ranging from 18 to 79 years. Lateral densitometric scans of the thoracic-lumbar spine were made using Expert-XL densit...

GnRH test as an additional investigation in the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): potential application of stimulated LH/FSH ratio

Cajdler-Luba Agata , Lewandowski Krzysztof , Bienkiewicz Malgorzata , Salata Ireneusz , Lewinski Andrzej

Diagnosis of PCOS may be sometimes difficult, e.g. due to limited sensitivity of androgen assays and discrepancies in interpretation of ovarian ultrasound imaging. As GnRH stimulation test can reveal a relative LH excess, then we have endeavoured to assess whether this test might be useful in the diagnosis of PCOS.Patients and methods: The study involved 154 subjects: PCOS group, n=120, age (mean±S.D.) 24.8±5.4 years, BMI ...

Elastography based on tissue Doppler in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules: a pilot study

Adamczewski Zbigniew , Krawczyk-Rusiecka Kinga , Dedecjus Marek , Brzezinski Jan , Lewinski Andrzej

Objective: Aiming at the highest specifity in differentiating benign from malignant thyroid nodules effects in new diagnostics developments. Recent technologies such as elastography enable determination of tissue stiffness difference between focal lesions and surrounding thyroid tissue – reference tissue. This method is based on quantifying the stiffness of the lesion – the malignant changes show decreased elasticity when compared to adjacent tissue. Tissue Doppler u...

Positive correlation between serum omentin and thrombospondin-1 in gestational diabetes despite lack of correlation with insulin resistance indices

Lewandowski Krzysztof , Cypryk Katarzyna , Nadel Iwona , Lewinski Andrzej , Bienkiewicz Malgorzata , Tan Bee , Randeva Harpal

Background: Gestational diabetes (GDM) is characterized by insulin resistance and a pro-inflammatory state, both factors possible related to adipokine expression. In our study we have endeavoured to assess serum levels of insulin-sensitising omentin and pro-inflammatory thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) in GDM.Subjects and methods: The study included 20 women with GDM, diagnosed according to the WHO criteria, age 29.7±5.5 (mean±S.D.), BMI...

Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP-4) levels do not change after oral glucose tolerance test in obese and overweight individuals, but correlate with some indices of insulin resistance

Lewandowski Krzysztof C , Basinska-Lewandowska Magdalena , Bienkiewicz Malgorzata , Randeva Harpal S , Lewinski Andrzej

Background: Secretory products from adipocytes may contribute to increased insulin resistance (IR). Retinol-binding protein-4 (RBP-4) may increase IR in mice, with elevated levels in insulin resistant mice and humans with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Mechanisms regulating RBP-4 synthesis remain not fully understood. It is not clear whether short-term hyperglycaemia alters RBP-4 levels in humans. In order to investigate this, we measured serum RBP-4 concentrations during 75 gra...

Semiquantitative evaluation of E-cadherin immunoexpression in the thyroid neoplasms

Klencki Mariusz , Sporny Stanislaw , Popowicz Bozena , Lewinski Andrzej , Slowinska-Klencka Dorota

Cadherins are proteins important for regulation of cell to cell adhesion. It has been postulated that the loss of cadherins may be an essential step in progression of cancer cell dedifferation, leading to increased metastatic potential. In the present study, the immunoexpression of E-cadherin was examined in various types of thyroid neoplasms and compared with that expression in normal thyroid tissue. The histopathological slides from 138 thyroid carcinomas (90 papillary, 8 fo...

Assessment of prevalent vertebral deformities in morphometric X-ray absorptiometry

Skowronska-Jozwiak Elzbieta , Pludowski Pawel , Karczmarewicz Elzbieta , Lewinski Andrzej , Lorenc Roman

Vertebral morphometric X-ray absorptiometry (MXA) is a new tool developed to evaluate the presence of vertebral deformities. Low dose of radiation, fan-beam and the centerline scan technique are believes more advantageous than the classic morphometry using conventional lateral radiograms. We assessed the prevalence of vertebral fractures by MXA in adult population of Łódź region as a part of Polish population studied in EPOLOS epidemiological study.<p cl...
